Swiss skier, Marco Odermatt, wins the first Super G of the season with an outstanding run and clocking in a time of 1:08.61. After already having won the first race of the season, the Giant Slalom in Sölden (AUT), and placing 4th in the Downhill in Lake Louise (CAN), the Swiss skier wouldn’t have been expecting anything less than a podium finish today. His win today combined with his Super G win back in 2019, makes him the third Swiss man with back-to-back SG wins in Beaver Creek after Zurbriggen and Accola. Last season Odermatt came second in the Super G World Cup standings behind Austrian skier, Vincent Kriechmayr, who is also the Super G World Champion. If Odermatt continues putting in top performances, it’s clear that he will be a top contender for the Super G Crystal Globe this season.
After winning the opening men’s Downhill race of the season, Matthias Mayer (AUT), was out to get another win during the opening men’s Super G race. Being the first racer of the day to cross the line, unfortunately Mayer couldn’t hold onto the top spot. He finished 0.78 seconds behind Odermatt and managed to hold that spot for the remainder of the race. Mayer is yet to win a race in Beaver Creek, however, the next coming days will provide him with several opportunities to do so.
The big surprise of the day was seeing Canadian skier, Broderick Thompson claim his first ever World Cup podium and to be the first Canadian man to be on a speed podium since 2017. On his 48th World Cup start, Thompson started with bib 35 and raced his heart out to clench third place ahead of German skier, Andreas Sander.
