Engineer Reveals How To Properly Fix Core Shots On Skis And Snowboards

Would-be ski repair fanatics, listen up: on a recent episode of The Bomb Hole, snowboard engineer Justin Clark revealed the best way to repair dings and core shots on damaged skis.

And before you assume that you already know how to repair your skis, watch this first. You might learn a thing or two—I know I did.

Simply put, I—and maybe you—have been doing this whole ski repair thing completely wrong.

For minor dings, I did exactly what Clark cautioned against and dripped bubbles of P-tex without letting it get hot. It’s the same deal with core shots—I just dripped P-tex in there and hoped for the best. (Not to mention, I’ve never heard of “metal grip.”) No wonder my “repairs” tended to crack and fall out after minor use.

It’s funny—I’m under the impression that the methods I’ve used for base repairs, which involved dripping P-tex willy-nilly, are widely accepted as the correct way of doing things. Therefore, I assume I’m not the only one who found Clark’s tips revelatory. It makes me wonder how much “common knowledge” in the ski gear world misses the mark.

And, as we all know by now, this is probably the right season to learn the proper way to conduct ski repairs. With lower-than-usual snowfall throughout North America, core shots are all but guaranteed.
