Enforcing the Fluor Wax Ban: FIS Implements Reliable Testing

Enforcing the Fluor Wax Ban: FIS Implements Reliable Testing

[ad_1]

SR Staff Report

In November 2019, the FIS passed a total fluor wax ban, making it a top priority since then. However, because the tools for detection hadn’t reached an affordable and reliable level, the ban’s implementation has been slow. Now that the testing technology has proved proficient, the FIS will begin regular testing at the FIS World Cup this season. Testing will also occur at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships. Additionally, regulators will conduct random testing at other levels of competition to ensure they are regulating the sport.

Although the wax companies have been working tirelessly to produce non-fluor waxes that perform as well or better than their fluor predecessors, fluor is often still a competitive advantage. Therefore, the FIS needed a reliable test before enforcing the ban.

At the World Cup races, the Fluor Equipment Controller of the FIS Control Team will be in a separate tent next to the finish area exit gate. Additionally, before the season, the FIS will offer testing opportunities so the ski service personnel can determine if skis will pass at the races. Some older base materials were made with fluor during manufacturing and will no longer be able to be used in competitions.

Testing location

Outside the testing tent, the Fluor Equipment Controller will set up three racks, one for leaving skis to be tested, another for picking up fluor-negative skis, and another “Red Fluor” for skis that did not pass the test.

Skis that test positive for fluor will be deemed “Red Fluor,” and the staff representing the athlete will be informed. The athlete or representative can then request to see the multiple test measurements that will disqualify the athlete after the competition. The Fluor Equipment Controller has to communicate the decision, which is not appealable. Additionally, the FIS database will register all testing results from the race.

Rule 222.8 of the ICR

All FIS disciplines and levels prohibit fluorinated wax or tuning products containing fluorine. Fluorinated wax can be a competitive advantage and its use in competition will result in disqualification.

Measuring procedure

  • Aim to test one ski of each pair
  • 0-1 GREEN points, move to the next point, up to three points
  • If the Fluor Equipment Controller finds more than one fluor-positive point during the measurement, they will measure as many points as needed to confirm the result. If they find three points to be positive, they will disqualify the participant (DSQ).
  • The Fluor Equipment Controller places skis testing green in a dedicated rack for immediate collection.
  • The Fluor Equipment Controller will place skis testing positive for fluor in the dedicated RED rack. The representative (NSA/SRS) can then request to see the measured points after the end of the race.

Jury:

The Jury will receive information from the Fluor Equipment Controller and make a decision about DQS and potential sanctions.
