Las Leñas Closes Avalanche Prone Terrain Following Blizzard

Winter 2023 has gotten off to a slow start in South America.
Powder days have been few and far between as skiers are patiently waiting for Old Man Winter to get his act together. This weekend’s news might be a sign of snowier days to come.
Powderchasers and PowderQuest and are reporting that 19 inches fell overnight on Friday, July 21st at Las Leñas Ski Resort in Argentina. Check out the photo of snow blanketing cars yesterday morning:
It appears that the recent snowfall is causing significant terrain closures across Las Leñas.
A quick look on the resort’s website shows that only 6 of the resort’s 26 defined trails/tracks/pistes are open this morning, July 23rd.
In addition, the resort has issued an avalanche danger level of ‘Risk 3- NOTABLE’, and has closed all off-piste/off track terrain.
Las Leñas defines Risk 3 as:
“Avalanches can be triggered even by weak overloads and on many slopes whose characteristics are usually described in the bulletin. In certain situations, some spontaneous outbursts of medium and sometimes large avalanches are possible.”
The resort is not reporting an official storm total, but according to the video below by PowderQuest, more snow continued to fall throughout the day yesterday:
Here’s hoping this storm is the first of many more to come for Las Leñas and the rest of South America.
