Alpine Canada Alpin has nominated nine fast women and 14 talented men for the 2023-24 Canadian Alpine team – a small team with considerable success. The list includes one woman and three men appointed to the National NextGen Group.

However, the names missing are the most notable. Beloved veterans Trevor Philp and Marie-Michèle Gagnon have retired from professional ski racing. Both ended their careers mid-season. Philp’s 12-year World Cup career ended with an injury sustained in the January 29th Cortina d’Ampezzo World Cup super-G. Gagnon ended her 15-year World Cup career at the same site after racing in the January 22nd World Cup super-G in Italy.

However, the 2023-24 Canadian team includes significant talent.

Valérie Grenier won her first World Cup in Kranjska Gora and followed it up with 3rd place in the World Cup finals in Andorra. Grenier was also one of four members of the Canadian team that earned bronze in the Team Parallel at the 2023 World Championships.

James (Jack) Crawford had three World Cup podiums to accompany his super-G 2023 World Championship gold.

Also, the sport will always remember the World Championship slalom gold the University of Vermont Catamount, Laurence St-Germain won in Méribel France.

Cameron Alexander reminded the world just how talented he is when he took the bronze in the men’s 2023 World Championship downhill.

And, of course, there were three other members in the group that delivered the World Championship Team Parallel bronze medal, including Jeffrey Read, Britt Richardson, and Erik Read.

Seven Canadian athletes delivered five World Cup and four World Championship podiums during the 2023 season. This is undoubtedly one of the young, exciting teams impressing the ski racing world while operating with modest resources.
