What distinguishes Gould athletics from traditional boarding schools or ski academies, is its approach to the “whole person.” An Olympic-track winter sports competition program, coupled with an outstanding academic experience and all the amenities of a boarding school campus, our competition program is in the unique position to offer our students and families the most comprehensive program in the country. Our close proximity and distinctive partnership with Sunday River make for unparalleled athletic training and competition, and recent investments such as the new Gould Academy T-Bar and T72 Park Complex help create the “complete package.” Our multi-layered On Snow athletic curriculum includes a multi-discipline Competition Program that includes the Freestyle, Snowboard, Nordic, and Alpine disciplines; Prep Alpine, Prep Snowboarding, and Prep Nordic teams; hands-on experiential learning programs like Ski Patrol certification and Instructor Training programs; as well as a program for students learning to ski and snowboard for the very first time.

Gould is currently a Silver Level Certified US Ski & Snowboard Club. Over the next ten years, we seek to cement our role as the most inclusive, innovative, and progressive winter-sports competition program in the country, playing a pivotal role in advancing high performance. Gould will consistently produce the most athletic skiers and professional coaches in the country, preparing both for collegiate and national team advancement.

Alpine Coach (Winter Season 2021-2022)

The Alpine Coach is primarily responsible for the training for and execution of USSA, FIS and other non-sanctioned alpine competitions. The Alpine Coach works with the Head Alpine Coach or On-Snow Program Director to plan both on and off snow training sessions and then execute those sessions. Plans should be congruent with the Program’s current philosophy and follow the guidelines of safe and healthy competition as described by USSA/FIS. Consistent communication with athletes and parents is important and necessary.

As a representative of Gould Academy it is essential to have an understanding and support the school’s mission as well as culture. The job also requires good attendance, punctuality, and to be a positive team leader (coach).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily
    • Setup and breakdown of training venues as needed
    • Follow Coaching plan; deviate when conditions, fatigue, other factors necessitate
    • Provide feedback to athletes
    • Communicate successes and failures with other coaches and Head Coach/Program Director
    • Note athlete attendance
    • Manage year long training and race schedule for alpine athletes
    • Manage athlete equipment in cooperation with Head Alpine Coach Sunday River Speedworks and equipment manufacturers
    • Daily preparation of the training venue (course setting, fencing, snow preparation, etc)
    • Drive athletes to and from training and races
    • Coach and support dryland program
  • Weekly
    • Check training plan, make adjustments
    • Meet with other alpine coaches and Head Coach/Program Director to plan for the short and long term
    • Post photos and program commentary on Social Media
    • Conduct trampoline/dryland/off snow training activities
    • Conduct regular video review sessions either on-hill or as soon as possible after
    • Attend Weekly Staff Meetings
  • Periodic
    • Assist with recruiting and retention initiatives as directed
    • Transport on-snow athletes to/from campus or airport
    • Write athlete comments
    • Assist athletes with gear selection and maintenance
    • Coach and support commercial ski training camps
    • Regular communication with athletes, parents and faculty
    • Participate in Professional Development Clinics/trainings
    • Assist Weekend Alpine Coaches as needed
  • Anually –
    • Participate in annual review process
    • Assist in end of season debrief and planning for next season

Other Duties:

This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. They will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by their supervisor(s) and/or the Head of School.

  • Job requires considerable travel, working weekends and regularly 10+ hour days in season
  • Supervision of student athletes when traveling (at all times 24-hours)
  • Management of student-athlete academic work while traveling
  • Transporting athletes to training, competitions, Dr. appointments, airports, etc
  • Course/park maintenance
  • Communicating with teachers, advisors and parents regularly to ensure academic and athletic goal attainment
  • The position also requires operation of computer, camera, and communication skills,
  • Ability to get along with co-workers, and other school community members, etc.

Qualifications

  • This job requires a high school diploma; college degree are encouraged
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to ski while carrying more than 50lbs of equipment
  • Competence in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers and Google Docs
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and cold temps
  • Ability to set training courses and race day courses
  • USSA coaches and officials certification
  • USSA coaches license (requires background screening) or foreign equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and Passport
  • Successfully pass a criminal and sexual offender background check

Physical Work Environment

  • Ability to ski while carrying more than 50lbs of equipment
  • Occasional prolonged and irregular hours, working November through April 6-7 days a week
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling
  • Occasional lifting up to 10-50 pounds of supplies
  • Must be able to travel to all campus locations and to appropriate training and meetings

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, seasonal, exempt position beginning November 1 and ending mid-April 2022. Gould provides meals at our campus dining facility.
