Norway’s Silje Opseth won the first of two FIS World Cups at Holmenkollen in Oslo on Saturday. The 24-year-old won in just one run ahead of Katharina Schmid from Germany and Eirin Maria Kvandal from Norway.
As in the men’s competition immediately before, the conditions were also extremely difficult for the women. Due to constant interruptions, the first run lasted 1 hour and 17 minutes, almost as long as two runs would normally take.
World Cup leader Nika Prevc from Slovenia was hit particularly hard. Prevc, who was the last athlete at the start, had to wait over 20 minutes until the conditions finally allowed her to jump. Prevc then mastered the waiting time and the jump with flying colors and finished in 6th place, directly behind her direct pursuer in the overall World Cup, the Austrian Eva Pinkelnig.
However, the best and longest jump of the day went to local hero Silje Opseth. Opseth jumped 127.5 meters (109.3 points), which was enough for a well-deserved victory.
For winner Silje Opseth it was her seventh World Cup victory, the second this season after her success in Willingen.
With second place, Katharina Schmid achieved second place for the second time this season (Sapporo), the three-time world champion from Planica has yet to win this winter. “That was a wild competition, quite turbulent. I had a very good jump and also a bit of luck and I’m super happy that I was able to stand on the podium today. I felt really sorry for Nika at the end, she had to wait an incredibly long time, but then she did really well,” said Schmid.
With her third place, Eirin Maria Kvandal was able to defend her lead in the RAW AIR overall standings. Kvandal (231.5 points) now leads ahead of Silje Opseth (227.7 points) and Katharina Schmid (222.1).
The second women’s competition at Holmenkollen in Oslo starts on Sunday at 17:00.
