The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club (AVSC) is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader to fill the role of its next Executive Director. AVSC is seeking an individual with strong relationship building skills, excellent communication skills, and a track record of success in fundraising and operational management.
AVSC Executive Director is responsible for overall planning and administration, including program and personnel management, fundraising, overall brand positioning, community relations, and business operations as well as developing and executing the strategic goals and objectives of AVSC’s five programs: Alpine, Nordic, Freestyle/Freeride, Snowboarding, and the Aspen Supports Kids (recreational). The new leader is expected to sustain and strengthen the all-around excellence of AVSC from coaching novice athletes to developing elite, world-class competitors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six or more years of impactful leadership in an organization of similar size and scope, e.g., a nonprofit organization with hundreds of volunteers, youth athletic programs, an equal or larger budget, and multiple programs.
- A passion for the mission of AVSC.
- A deep understanding of and appreciation for mountain culture.
- A desire to be heavily engaged in the Aspen community and build strong relationships with the community, AVSC stakeholders, donors, and staff—both personally and professionally.
- A genuine passion for mountain sports and ability to ski and/or snowboard.
WHO WE ARE:
Aspen, at its core, is a mountain town rooted in winter sports and the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club (AVSC) is a cornerstone organization. AVSC has been the vehicle to experience Aspen in its purest form for generations for youth living in the Roaring Fork Valley. Established in 1937, AVSC is a 501 (c)(3) community-based youth development organization that serves over 3,200 young athletes annually. It is recognized as the oldest youth nonprofit in the Roaring Fork Valley. With an annual operating budget of $7.3 million, 28 full-time, year-round staff, and over 140 staff and coaches in our winter season, AVSC is dedicated to access and excellence while instilling our core values of commitment, teamwork, and integrity. AVSC’s programming offerings positively impacting their physical and mental well-being, while creating a strong community and sense of connection where cultural background and financial resources are not factors. AVSC uses skiing, snowboarding, and biking as a platform for youth to experience the mountains while building character, challenging themselves, staying healthy, and making new friends. We continue to provide top-tier coaches and instructors in our Alpine, Freestyle, Nordic, Snowboarding, and Recreational programs.
LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES:
- Experience managing nonprofits, including managerial, interpersonal, and communication skills coupled with the ability to think creatively and strategically about long-term sustainability.
- Demonstrated budget management experience, including revenue generation and bookkeeping experience.
- Capital Campaign experience.
- Experience in youth sports programming and events with a particular passion for mountain sports.
- Proven leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and inspire, solve problems, mediate conflicts, and build relationships internally and externally.
- Experience working with a board of directors, coaches, and volunteers.
- A collaborative orientation and proven ability to provide constructive feedback while promoting a respectful work environment.
- Experience collaborating on overall brand position, marketing materials, and community outreach initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Operating an efficient and professional organization. This includes developing and overseeing capital and operating budgets, insurance, legal counsel, internal systems, policy, and procedures for monitoring the organization’s ongoing health.
- Developing and executing a comprehensive annual and long-term fundraising plan that will generate contributed income from a broad base of supporters, including individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses, and government entities.
- Managing and evolving AVSC’s program offerings and staffing plan for both the athletic and administrative sides.
- Collaborating with the Board of Directors and staff to develop a long-term strategic plan and coordinate with the team to achieve the organization’s goals.
- Conveying AVSC’s mission and objectives to the Aspen community and the greater Roaring Fork Valley community.
- Fostering clear communications, facilitating appropriate roles and relations – especially with Aspen Skiing Company and Aspen School District, and enabling a fully professional and valuable community resource.
- Building and nurturing significant partnerships and community relationships.
- Overseeing proper governance of the AVSC Board of Directors.
- Collaborating with key personnel to implement best practices of fundraising, marketing, public relations, and programs.
