Utah's Mt. Superior Is Still Skiing Incredibly Well Despite Dust And Rain

The official start of summer is only a few days on June 21st, and, as is usually the case this time of year, most ski areas have called it quits.

But ski areas closing shop doesn’t mean enterprising skiers have given up on winter. Watch as this skier, who goes by Odyssey on Youtube, descends Mt. Superior’s Su*cide Chute in Utah during a backcountry strike mission. The goods looked, well, pretty good.

Mt. Superior and Su*cide Chute are located in the Wasatch Range near Alta and Snowbird. Su*cide Chute offers sustained steep skiing in avalanche-prone terrain, meaning it’s best skiing during the spring after the snowpack stabilizes. Powder Project, a website that aggregates backcountry descents, suggests you “you don’t want to be here” if avalanche danger is high.

Late-season lines, like the one you just watched, are still possible in part due to the enormous amount of snow (read: historic) Utah saw this winter.

Although, despite the historic winter, Utah’s shedding snow faster than in previous, less precipitation-heavy years. Why?

Long story short, dust. Dust content in snow, due to physical processes I won’t pretend to understand, makes snow melt faster.

To read more about the speedy snow melt in the Wasatch, check out this article from Powder writer Anneka Williams, who, unlike me, has studied climatic processes.
