Position Summary

Rowmark Ski Academy is seeking a Rowmark Junior Program Director. This is the key leadership position directing our U8 to U14 alpine ski racing program. It is a full-time, exempt position, with a comprehensive benefits package included, with an annual contract and review from July 1st to June 30th, and reports to the Rowmark Ski Academy Program Director.

Rowmark Ski Academy and Junior Program Overview

     In 1982, Rowmark Ski Academy was founded as a division of Rowland Hall. Just over three decades later, in 2014, Rowmark proudly became one of the first clubs designated for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s (USSA) highest Gold Certification level. Rowmark Junior Program skiers are full-time students at Rowland Hall. The Junior Program is a progressive alpine skiing and racing program coupled with an extraordinary academic program in the lower and middle schools.

    We foster a lifelong appreciation of alpine skiing and racing, all in a fun, positive learning environment tailor-made for young athletes. The Junior Program develops versatile skiers who understand ski-racing basics and have a strong technical foundation in the sport. As they grow through our program, skiers become more self-reliant—we increase their level of competition, racing focus, and number of days on snow in order to prepare them for our Academy, if they wish to apply. At every level, we encourage young skiers to have fun and love the sport.

     The Junior Program skis 30 minutes from the Lincoln Street Campus at the new state-of-the-art Utah Olympic Park alpine venues and Park City’s Eagle Race Arena, the Giant Slalom site of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Rowmark skiers race in the Intermountain Division of the United States Ski Association. Our U10 and older teams also purchase Ikon passes, giving us local access to Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, Deer Valley, and Snowbasin for world-class free skiing opportunities. 
     Our skiers have had a great deal of success in divisional, regional, national, World Cup, and Olympic competitions. Rowland Hall is proud of our graduates’ skiing accomplishments and the careers they’ve chosen.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • To provide direction and lead coaching expertise, on hill, and conditioning year-round programming for the Junior Program in collaboration with the Academy Director, Junior Program Head Coaches, and the Team Manager. The projected Rowmark Junior Program (JP) size for 2023-24 is ~70 athletes across five teams from U8-U14.  
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Junior Program including communications, marketing, budget, staff training, and hiring in collaboration with the Academy Director and Team Manager.
  • Develop and execute balanced annual Junior Program budget in collaboration with the Academy Director and Team Manager.  This includes purchase and maintenance of team equipment including gates, radios, drills, team jackets, and other on-hill and conditioning equipment. 
  • Direct and manage a short-term and long-term vehicle maintenance and replacement plan for our JP vehicle fleet, which currently includes two shuttle buses, a suburban and a trailer.
  • Create a comprehensive, year-round ski training and race plans for the Junior Program with emphasis on sound periodization and peaking principles in collaboration with the JP Head Coaches.
  • Direct the evaluation of the development of each athlete by the JP coaching staff throughout the season through a goal setting and evaluation process including physical testing, and post-camp, mid-season, and season-end evaluation writing. 
  • Communicate clearly with athletes, parents, team manager, and school administration regarding training, competing, and travel.
  • Work closely with JP Head Coaches and a local ski shop to manage ski equipment purchase and ordering. 
  • Submit race entries in accordance with deadlines and procedures as outlined by IMD and USSS.
  • Work with Team Manager to coordinate travel plans for all JP athletes as needed (ground transport, flights, lodging,…) often working in collaboration with the JP Head Coaches.
  • Work with Academy Director to coordinate and communicate summer, fall and winter training camps.
  • Develop and execute fall parent informational meetings for each JP Team, and spring banquets for the celebration of team as well as individual growth and achievement. 
  • Schedule and direct periodic staff meetings.
  • Direct and participate in the weekly staff driving rotation to transport Rowmark athletes from school to training and back.
  • Host school visits, tours, and training opportunities of prospective student-athletes. 
  • Communicate with our training venues to schedule daily training lane spaces. 
  • Attend periodic IMD and/or USSS meetings/clinics.
  • Stay current with USSS rules and equipment specifications.
  • Be available work and travel for extended periods of time.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to schedule changes due to weather or other factors.  
  • Exhibit a consistently professional, positive, and mature coaching style in working with children and adolescent athletes.

Skills and Requirements

  • Has a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Is a Certified USSA Coaches Level 200 Coach or higher including current SafeSport training. 
  • Will obtain a Utah Commercial Driver’s License in order to share in driving rotation of Rowmark bus to and from training.  
  • Has or will obtain First Aid and CPR certification and update every two years
  • Demonstrates cultural competency both on and off the hill.
  • Functional video camera and computer skills especially with regard to videoing and uploading to our Sprongo video application platform.

  • lift 40-50 lbs and carry SL and GS gates on an alpine training hill while skiing.  
  • move easily around a ski hill, weight room, gym and field to engage with students, when coaching or supporting their training practices.
  • be able to communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including students, families, and colleagues.
  • be able to contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the ski academy.
