Riiber claims 5th King’s Trophy

Jarl Magnus Riiber is the winner of today’s Individual event in Oslo (NOR), receiving his 5th King’s Cup from the royal family.

The Norwegian was already in the lead after the Ski Jumping competition on the Holmenkollen HS 134 this morning.

In bright sunshine the local hero jumped the furthest distance of the day with 134.5 meters (152.9 pts) in Oslo (NOR) and took the lead. Therefore, he was the first one to start into the 10 km at the Holmekollen Arena at 14:00 CET.

Rank 2 after jumping went to Franz-Josef Rehrl from Austria, who landed at 128 meters (133.2 pts) and went into the course 1:19 min after Riiber.

Best Jumper Ryota Yamamoto from Japan (126.5 mts, 129.4 pts) placed third 1:34 min behind the leader.

Although the gap to Riiber was impossible to close, a tight fight for other two podium spots could be expected with the good skiers Johannes Lamparter (+2:05 min) Julian Schmid (+2:06 min) and Jens Luraas Oftebro (+2:45 min) coming from behind.

Already during the first lap Yamamoto couldn’t keep up the high pace of Franz-Josef Rehrl and fell behind while the Austrian bravely defended his second place.

But after 4.7 km he too was caught by the approaching group of pursuers around Schmid, Lamparter and Kristjan Ilves.

While Riiber continued to run a lonely race at the front and was able to enjoy the atmosphere in front of thousands of spectators in Norway’s forests, Stefan Rettenegger led the chasing group.

After 7.5 km the gap to Riiber had already grown to 2:14 min, while five athletes started the last lap together.

In the end, Rettenegger and Ilves had to let go, so that Lamparter and Schmid turned onto the home stretch together.

While Riiber celebrated his 54th World Cup victory, Schmid and Lamparter delivered an exciting finish sprint, which the German (+1:56.5 min) narrowly won, while the Austrian (+1:57.9 min) came in third.
