The 2023 ski season in the southern hemisphere has started a month earlier than expected after heavy snowfall on New Zealand’s ski slopes.
The Manganui ski field, with four drag lifts, is reported to have opened today to make the most of the new snow.
Up to 40cm of snowfall was reported, with Coronet Peak, above, reporting the most. The picture top is from Cardrona.
Most ski areas in New Zealand, as well as in Australia and the South American Andes, open for their ski season in June or July each year. There was snowfall in Australia too, last week, but nowhere opened there.
It’s stills snowing in the northern hemisphere too though, with fresh snow reported in Colorado and on high slopes in the Alps in recent days – about 40 areas are still open in Europe and North America.
The Hintertux glacier in Austria’s Tirol region posted 50cm of snowfall on Thursday morning (below).
