The men start the World Championships with alpine combined

Who is racing, when are they racing and how to watch the men’s alpine combined

Tomorrow Tuesday, February 7th, the men’s competition will begin in Courchevel, France. Fans will witness a large field of talented skiers competing in the alpine combined first run super-G. However, due to the alpine combined being scheduled before the super-G, many athletes who entered did so only to gain experience on the race hill before the super-G. Following the first run, many athletes who finish the super-G will not start the afternoon slalom. 

Favorites

That said, the afternoon slalom will see a small group of the best all-around skiers competing to be World Champion. The favorites for the podium certainly include the Swiss Skier Loïc Meillard, Norwegian Atle McGrath and Austrian Marco Schwarz. Uniquely, Meillard is the only one in the field to earn a 2022-23 World Cup podium in both disciplines. But McGrath was 5th in his only super-G and earned a slalom podium. Additionally, Schwarz has accumulated top ten World Cup results in both events. 

Notably, France’s Alexis Pinturault has a super-G podium and a top-five slalom result. He is also skiing in his home country. However, he has struggled in his last two slalom starts. He also reported not feeling well when he arrived at the championships. 

All three 2022 Olympic medalists are racing. Notably, gold medalist Johannes Strolz has not competed in super-G this season and has not had a top-ten in slalom. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has won two World Cup super-Gs this season but has not competed in any slaloms. Likewise, Canada’s James Crawford has two top-ten super-Gs this season but has not raced a slalom. The Beijing Olympic alpine combined slalom was simple and helped the speed skiers maintain their first-run advantage. Tomorrow the top of the Courchevel slalom is a steep challenge.

The two North American teams have entered eight skiers. Canada’s James Crawford is the reigning Olympic bronze medalist.

The super-G will begin at 5:00 am Eastern Time and 2:00 am on the West Coast. The slalom will begin at 8:30 am Eastern Time and 5:30 am on the West Coast.
