This year Taos will once again host the WPST 2023 Taos World Championships. Guests will have the opportunity to watch some of the world’s best athletes compete and to interact with international Olympic alpine ski racers.

Taos is quickly becoming one of the premier sustainability voices in ski racing. Taos’ commitment to providing world-class skiing while minimizing its impact on this planet is incredible. It provides an illuminating path for other ski resorts to start thinking about lessening their impact on the environment.

In 2017, Taos Ski Valley was the first and still the only ski resort to be certified as a B Corporation. This rigorous certification ensures Taos protects its people, place and planet, and the resort also commits to “having fun while we do it.”  The resort also has a NetZero by 2030 pledge, and in 2022 became certified CarbonNeutral® by Climate Impact Partners. The resort achieved this impressive certification through a mix of carbon offsets and carbon-reducing strategies.

Taos Ski Valley CEO David Norden further explains, “To achieve this milestone, we conducted a rigorous audit to understand our carbon footprint fully, so now we are poised to cut greenhouse gasses further.” The initiative at Taos to reduce carbon emissions and lessen their impact on the environment involves three critical areas of energy use: renewable power, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient buildings.

Resort operations, including chairlifts and snowmaking machines, are powered by renewable solar energy through a partnership with the local utility. Taos’ snow guns are also high-efficiency, meaning they use less water and energy.

Taos Ski Valley has another innovative way its reduces its carbon impact. The resort utilizes a food composter that diverts more than 90% of its food waste from the landfill and produces rich compost which it uses to restore mountain environment. Also, in keeping the natural environment around the resort in mind, Taos is a charter signatory of The Nature Conservancy’s Rio Grande Water Fund, which holds a collaborative goal of restoring 600,000 acres of critical forests and headwaters of the Rio Grande by helping restore the natural ecosystems and protecting water sources.

This year’s WPST 2023 Taos World Championships are an excellent opportunity to enjoy the high-altitude peaks of Taos while watching the world’s best ski athletes compete. And every guest can rest assured that their stay will have minimal impact on the environment while enjoying the amenities this gorgeous resort offers.
