Where do the North American women rank after Spindleruv Mlyn

To date, during the 2022-23 season, there have been 119 women who have scored World Cup points. Seventeen of them are from North America. Eleven are from the United States and six are from Canada. Combined, they represent just over 14% of the women who have scored during the 2022-23 season through January.

Twenty nations have at least one athlete on the list. Austria has 23 women who have scored, Switzerland has 18 and Italy has 16. However, Switzerland leads the women’s Nations Cup with 583 more points than Italy and 622 more than Austria. The US women are currently 4th, trailing the Swiss by 1053 points.

However, Mikaela Shiffrin has contributed 1697 of the 2486 points scored by the US women. Shiffrin also leads Petra Vlhova in the individual overall by 731 points.

Three US women, Ava Sunshine, Zoe Zimmermann, and Lauren Macuga, have scored their first career World Cup points this season. They are three of the twelve U21 women worldwide who have scored this season. Sweden is the only country besides the US with more than one and it also has three.

Shiffrin has scored in all four disciplines and has won in slalom, giant slalom, and super-G. The North American women have accumulated 15 podiums this season. Shiffrin has 14, also a career total of 85 victories and Paula Moltzan recently earned her career first podium in a Semmering slalom.

USA’s Bella Wright, Breezy Johnson, Paula Moltzan, and Katie Hensien and Canadian Marie-Michele Gagnon have scored in two disciplines. Additionally, five other Canadians and six other US women have scored in one.

Undoubtedly, scoring a single World Cup point is an accomplishment few ever achieve. Skiing in a World Cup is less exclusive but certainly an elite accomplishment to be proud of.
