Granerud wins in Zakopane

What no one had thought possible in the morning was a piece of ski jumping history at 6 p.m.: On Sunday morning, a violent storm had raged in Zakopane, Poland’s most popular winter sport resort, but at 4 p.m. the Ski Jumping World Cup began as planned. After two rounds, Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud was the steely winner.

Halvor Egner Granerud won the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Zakopane on Sunday. On the HS 140-metre hill, the winner of the Four Hills Tournament thus continued his run of the past weeks.
Granerud prevailed in a thrilling final ahead of Poland’s Dawid Kubacki, who was still clearly in the lead after the first round. “This morning nobody thought that there will be a competition today, that’s really great that this competition could take place today. Of course it was not an easy competition, my second jump was very good, but you also needed the necessary luck today without a doubt and I had this luck in the final” said Granerud.

In the once again sold-out ski jumping arena in Zakopane Kubacki and Granerud delivered a duel on the highest level, in the end Granerud was only 1.1 points ahead of Kubacki. Stefan Kraft in third place was already more than 8 points behind the runner-up.
Besides Kraft, Jan Hörl (5th), Daniel Tschofenig (9th), Clemens Aigner (10th) and Michael Hayböck (12th) provided a strong team result for the Austrians.
Anze Lanisek was the best Slovenian on rank 4, Markus Eisenbichler achieved a top result with rank 6 after a long dry spell.
