Through the eyes of a local

It’s that time of year again, winter is here! Cerro Castor, the southernmost ski resort in the world, based in Ushuaia, Argentina, has put on its Sunday best and is ready to wow the world with stunning views and plenty of fluffy white snow.

This year we are having a fantastic season. Signs of winter came early this year. March finished with a tremendous snowstorm, both up in the mountains and down in town, so kids rushed into the sloped streets with their sleds, eager to enjoy the white winter wonderland.

Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, located right in the heart of Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina’s youngest state. It is an island at the bottom of South America, the gateway to Antarctica and officially the end of the world. This beautiful and unique location is well-known for its rich ski history that started in the mid-’40s. Today, ski racing is alive and well in Ushuaia, and it’s safe to say that it will continue to be for a long time to come.

The best ski racers in the world visit annually

We have been fortunate to host the greatest names in ski racing at Cerro Castor. Every year the best athletes in the world visit us in our backyard. I will never forget riding the lift with Aksel Lund Svindal, whom I consider the greatest of all time.

Almost every big name over the last 20 years has skied gates here in Ushuaia. These superstars of the sport regularly mingle and blend with Ushuaians like locals. We have come to know their rhythms and their favorite restaurants. Because of their friendly attitude, we welcome them. Additionally, we greatly appreciate how nice they are to the local ski racers who look forward to their arrival every year. Some of the big names that we have welcomed in Ushuaia are Svindal, Pinturault, Shiffrin, and Goggia. However, our favorite athletes are the Simari Birkner family. Their family has proudly represented Argentina on the international stage for decades.

El Condor training run under the lift

Cerro Castor is located above the town, a beautiful drive surrounded by observation areas, glaciers, and Nordic skiing tracks. After 30 minutes of stunning views, you arrive at the base of the resort. The seven lifts spread through the ski area and efficiently service the 29 runs. Halcon Peregrino and El Condor are the most popular runs on the mountain for race training. A significant portion of these runs are visible and make an excellent attraction for all our visitors. Riding the main lift, recreational skiers get the unique opportunity to witness the performances of the best skiers in the world..

Ushuaia welcomes our international friends

Additionally, opportunities to indulge yourself are located throughout the resort. Plenty of wonderful restaurants serve Argentina’s famous meat dishes, lamb, and world-renowned wines. And while you enjoy the hospitality, you are surrounded by an old-school historic ski resort atmosphere. Many of the people you will see in the pictures that cover the walls are the local legends that will later share the chairlift with you. This wonderful ski area may be small, but its heart is gigantic.

Winter is alive and well in Ushuaia, and we love to see our town and mountain filled with skiers from all over the world. Annually we welcome our friends from the international ski racing community. And we hope to meet you here soon!
