Men’s Alpine World Cup Calendar for 2022/23

There is a lot to talk about concerning the Men’s FIS Alpine World Cup calendar for 2022/23.
Not What You Would Expect
This year’s calendar will not include the traditional night slalom in Zagreb and the downhill and super-G speed races in Kivitfjell. However, both venues will see the world’s best women compete at their venues. Zagreb will have two women’s slaloms, and Kivitfjell will host the women for speed events. But uniquely, this winter, the men will not visit either site.
New Events Assigned by FIS
Unique to both the men and women is the speed event opener on the new downhill designed by retired Swiss skier Didier Defago. Interestingly the course starts on the Glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland, and finishes in Cervinia, Italy.
The dual nation status makes this event one of a kind. Hopefully, the glacier weather cooperates at the end of October.
The biggest news is the additions of the giant slalom and slalom races in Pallisades Tahoe and the two DHs and a super-G races in Aspen. The men will compete in California on the 25th and 26th of February. Then the following week, on the third, fourth, and fifth of March in Aspen. Many expect these races to be game-changers for US ski racing as well as a boost for international broadcasting. Time will tell.
Two Downhill Races Scheduled at Four Sites
Another interesting detail of the calendar is the two downhill races scheduled for the Zermatt-Cervinia, Beaver Creek, Kitzbuhel, and Aspen races. We will see if any of those eight starts end up being a two-run competition.
Changes From Last Season’s Calendar
Other differences from last season’s schedule include the Garmisch-Partenkirchen men’s SL in the traditional Zagreb slot on January 4th. This change is significant because it will shorten the travel time to the next race in Adelboden. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is 240 miles closer to Adelboden than Zagreb. Also on the schedule this year is the return of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen DH and GS series on January 28th and 29th. Germany has no women’s races this season but will host three men’s races in January of 2023.
Chamonix France is back on the SL schedule with a race on February 4th. The race is only two days before the first day of the nearby FIS World Championships.
FIS Alpine World Championships February 6th through the 19th
Most of the men’s events for the 2023 FIS Alpine World Championships will be in Courchevel, France.
However, they will join the women in Meribel for the Team Parallel and the individual Parallel events on the 14th and 15th of February. The first event for the men is the alpine combined on the seventh, and the last is the men’s slalom on the 19th.
Opportunity To See the FIS Alpine Men’s World Cups On U.S. Soil
It will be an exciting season for our US men. Having four downhills, a super-G, a giant slalom, and a slalom on home soil is outstanding. Make plans to attend as many as you can. We hope you can be there to cheer for the men and energize them to perform their best.
