Position Description: 

Reporting directly to the Alpine Program Director (APD), the Head FIS and S&C Coach is responsible for the management, implementation, and success of the FIS and PG program. As well as being responsible for the management and implementation of Strength & Conditioning for all age Alpine athletes at JHSC. This position is also expected to assist in suggesting, developing, and implementing policies, programs, and goals as they relate to the Alpine Program at large. 

Success is measured by the quality of the athlete and employee experience, athlete success at the Divisional, Regional, National, and International competition levels, athlete and team ranking, athlete and employee skill development, parent satisfaction, and athlete retention.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Year-round management (design, monitoring, and implementation) of the FIS Team in coordination with APD and other FIS coaches
    • Year-round athletic plan for the FIS program o Individual yearly on-ski plans for all FIS athletes
    • Create an individualized athlete/program calendar of events
    • Oversee and coordinate consistent and regular FIS and PG athlete evaluation processes, including on-hill skill assessments.
    • Organize on-snow and off-snow training camps
    • Communicate effectively with athletes, staff, and parents o Utilize video review/archiving techniques online (Sprongo, Dropbox, etc.)
    • Meet with athletes, coaches, and parents for program nights/explanations
    • Develop and manage an athlete retention plan
  • Strength & Conditioning plans
    • Design, monitor and implement a Strength & Conditioning plan for all Alpine age groups
    • Individual yearly periodized S&C plans for all FIS and U16 athletes o Plan, monitor and implement 2 – 4 Strength & Conditioning tests
    • In coordination with all coaches manage S&C equipment
  • Participate in Divisional and Regional coaching projects as necessary or required
  • Coordinate training and travel with other JHSC departments/groups as necessary
  • Communicate with Sports Information Director (SID) to post information about the FIS program on the website, via email as appropriate, and to post results to the website
  • Help with hill preparation for Pre-season training, JHMR training and races, SK training and races
  • Attend and hold meetings as necessary
  • Organize and arrange logistics for FIS Team travel
  • Create trip budgets and info sheets for travel, and serve as Team Captain unless otherwise designated
  • After each trip direct athletes to properly clean up the interior of the vehicle (with athletes) & fill out a Vehicle Log sheet after each trip
  • Report all expenses (with receipts) to the APD and Chief Operating Officer
  • Review technical videos and publications
  • Attend professional development courses/seminars to upgrade/update personal skills
  • Assist APD with internal staff training

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Experience coaching FIS level athletes (FIS includes U18, U21, and PG)
  • Experience with coaching Strength & Conditioning
  • Personal high-level competitive experience
  • Exercise and Sport Science Certification with a specialty in strength & conditioning
  • Strong working relationships with IMD, Western Region, and USSS
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Ability to develop strategies and define best practices, training plans, and athletic-based curriculum for athlete development.
  • Extensive knowledge of alpine racing and S&C training programs with a proven record of developing successful athletes at the regional and/or national levels.
  • Ability to provide guidance in the areas of sports psychology, nutrition and equipment selection, preparation and maintenance.
  • Ability to act as a positive role model, inspiring, motivating, and positively influencing athletes.
  • Results-oriented and highly self-motivated.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis and perform manual labor and physically demanding duties on steep and uneven, mountain-like terrain and often in inclement weather.

Other General Requirements

  • The Head FIS and S&C Coach position is a full-time, year-round, exempt position and works primarily out of the JHSC office. The winter schedule includes six days per week, with an expected schedule of 9 am – 5 pm, Tuesday – Sunday. Travel required. Pay commensurate with experience.
  • The Head FIS and S&C Coach must maintain current US Ski & Snowboard, SafeSport, and other appropriate professional credentials.
  • Assist with all club events as appropriate, ie Ski Swap, Ski Ball, Margarita Cup, JHDH, Pole Pedal Paddle, and JHSC club-wide staff education in the fall
  • This is a leadership position in the club and the community. The Head FIS and S&C Coach must maintain high personal and professional standards & relations at all times.
