SR Staff Report

The Norwegian Ski Federation has named 34 athletes to the national alpine team.

According to the Norwegian Ski Federation, last season was one of the best for Norwegian alpine skiers.

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde swept the speed event titles with super-G and downhill World Cup titles, and Henrik Kristoffersen won the slalom globe.

Ragnhild Mowinckel finished fourth in the World Cup overall, and in March, she secured her first World Cup victory when she won the super-G race at the finals in Meribel, France.

Standout Jesper Saltvik Pedersen won 10 World Championship and Paralympic medals, seven gold, and won the World Cup overall for the fifth year.

Many familiar and strong athletes are amongst the Attacking Vikings; Kilde, Kristoffersen, Lucas Braathen, Atle Lie McGrath, Sebastian Foss Solevåg, Mowinckel, and – returning from injury – Kajsa Wickhoff Lie. So even though legendary Kjetil Jansrud retired in March, the Norwegians will remain strong. It will be exciting to see who develops and what the promising newcomers will add to the success.

Nominated are 12 women and 19 men to the 2022/23 A, B, and C national alpine teams. The para national team nominations include three men with A and B status.

According to the Norwegian Alpine Sports Director, Claus Johan Ryste, in an April 28 news release from the Norwegian Ski Federation, the focus of this year’s team selection is to have strong national teams that achieve results at the highest level internationally for both genders and in all disciplines. Ryste further explains that the increased number of athletes, especially on the C teams, reflects the wish to take good care of the many strong, young athletes in Norwegian alpine skiing, particularly after some years with a decreased team size.
