There is a lot of discussion concerning the average age of athletes in professional sports. Ski racing is no exception. Older athletes are performing at high levels well into their thirties. While the reasons are many and the dominant factor debatable, the average age of the top 60 on the World Cup Start List is not.
Common wisdom credits advanced sports medicine and sports science for helping athletes extend their careers. This year Dave Ryding of Great Britain won his first World Cup SL in the Kitzbühel at 35. At 41, Johan Clarey of France finished 9th in the World Cup DH standings.
On the other hand, youth also made their presence known. We witnessed two 21-year-olds born two days apart in Norway win three SLs. Atle Lie McGrath finished 3rd in the World Cup SL standings and Lucas Braathen 4th.
Below, however, are the facts concerning the average ages on the men’s World Cup Alpine circuit. You can make up your mind about what it means.
