The men took to Sugarloaf Mountain’s Narrow Gauge for the U.S. Alpine Championships and the NorAm Cup Finals downhill races on Wednesday. U.S. Ski Team veteran and Olympian Jared Golberg held off the Canadians for back to back wins, while Canadian Jeffrey Read secured the NorAm downhill title.

The U.S. Championship and NorAm final series was scheduled to begin on Sunday but after soft snow postponed the downhill races the men competed in a double header. The morning downhill doubled as the U.S. Championship race and NorAm. Goldberg held off Alpine Canada’s Read and teammate Broderick Thompson, who finished 0.01 seconds apart in second and third, respectively.

“I felt like I was really pushing the limits,” said Goldberg. “I’m used to these big long world cup downhills where the gates are twice as far apart. I was definitely running out the line and barely making the gates. Because the snow is so good I was able to take a risky line.”

Just off the podium was hometown native and U.S. member Sam Morse in fourth. Isaiah Nelson was the fastest junior among the men in ninth just off his Junior World Championship super-G win.

Goldberg defended his first run to claim his second downhill NorAm win of the day. This time Thompson was 0.17 seconds behind with Morse rounding out the podium in third. Read fell off the podium into fourth but after a strong NorAm season was awarded the NorAm downhill title ahead of Goldberg. Teammates Thompson and Kyle Alexander tied for third overall.

The men and women partake in the U.S. Championships super-G on Thursday followed by the NorAm super-G on Friday.
