The Middlebury carnival is one that many college athletes look forward to all year. The GS is tricky, with a very flat start that turns into some aggressive rolls. There is little room for error as the need to carry speed over the flats becomes the difference-maker in the race.
It is a tradition for Middlebury College students to hike up the Snow Bowl to watch the race, bringing out one of the best crowds on the NCAA circuit.
The slalom on Friday was canceled due to weather, but two GS’s were held on Saturday and Sunday. The latter was technically a makeup race for the canceled UVM GS at Stowe.
Men’s Saturday podium: 1. Justin Alkier, 2. Bradshaw Underhill, 3. Kyle Alexander
Men’s Sunday podium: 1. Joachim Jagge Lindstoel, 2. Bradshaw Underhill, 3. Kyle Alexander, 3. Justin Alkier
Despite the warm weather and soft snow on Friday, the snow held up well. The athletes were thankful, including Middlebury freshman Bradshaw Underhill. “I would like to thank the volunteers, coaches and Snow Bowl employees who helped make the races happen and kept the course in great shape,” he said. “The conditions were amazing both days and the snow set up perfectly after the warm conditions on Friday.”
Underhill negotiated the Snow Bowl well on both Saturday and Sunday, finishing with two consecutive second-place finishes.
He also shared some takeaways from his weekend, saying, “The weather made for a challenging race on Saturday, however, I was able to put down two good runs. Overall I had a great weekend and was able to capitalize on the races being on my home hill.”
Underhill’s senior teammate, Justin Alkier, was right by him both days, with first- and third-place finishes.
Women’s Saturday podium: Stephanie Lebby, Justine Clement, Ellie Curtis
Women’s Sunday podium: Ellie Curtis, Helene Kristoffersen, Stephanie Lebby
The UVM women once again dominated the race on Saturday, packing three into the top four. Steph Lebby, a UVM racer, found herself on the podium both days, with a first- and third-place finish.
Ellie Curtis, a Dartmouth senior, had a similar weekend. She was the top Dartmouth woman both days, finishing in third and first. This was the first time Curtis has won a EISA race in her career.
UNH carnival is scheduled for Feb. 25-26, the sixth and final carnival before NCAAs.
