Just back from her Olympic debut, U.S. Ski Team’s Katie Hensien captured her first NorAm GS win in Tuesday’s race at Whiteface Mountain.
Hensien’s most recent NorAm was in 2020. Known primarily as a slalom skier on the World Cup, she has challenged the stigma to win the last three GS’s she entered, including two NCAA races at Park City prior to the Olympics. After finishing 26th in the Olympic slalom, Hensien joined her teammates to land her first GS NorAm podium with the win.
In the first run, Stefanie Fleckenstein led for Alpine Canada while Hensien made a move from bib 32 into fifth. Teammate Allie Resnick was just ahead of Hensien in fourth behind a stacked field of Canadian skiers. In the second run, both Hensien and Resnick stepped up to extend ahead of Fleckenstein, finishing first and second.
“It felt great to be back after getting a top 30 at the Olympics and coming back and winning my first NorAm GS from bib 32,” said Hensien.
Resnick was just behind her teammate with a total time of 2:00:63, only 0.13 seconds behind Hensien. Despite finishing 1.48 seconds behind Hensien in the second run, Fleckenstein remained on the podium in third while her teammate Britt Richardson, who has won the last two GS NorAms, finished in fourth.
“I am super excited after today,” said Resnick. “I feel extra lucky to share the podium with Stef and Katie, and I am super happy with my consistency in GS. This is my fifth consecutive second place finish in GS this year, I guess I love silver!”
The women have a final slalom race at Whiteface on Wednesday before a monthlong break prior to NorAm finals at Sugarloaf.
