The Position
The Head U16 Alpine Coach identifies the needs of the individual athlete or the team and implements suitable and safe on-snow training programs. This position promotes a passion and spirit for the sport of skiing, instructs and supports athletes to develop and improve skiing technique and tactics. The Head U16 Alpine Coach provides leadership to all athletes and coaches; makes sure all tasks are completed in a timely and precise manner; and promotes open communication between Holderness/Franconia Ski Club (FSC) coaches, parents, USSA, NHARA, Cannon Mountain management and other ski areas.
This position is required to travel and coach at U16 local and regional USSA competitions. Evening and weekend work should be expected.
This is a 12-month position with benefits. This position works under the supervision of the Holderness School Director of Snow Sports.
Overview
Located amid the lakes and mountains of central New Hampshire, Holderness School is a traditional co-ed independent secondary school, serving grades 9-12. Holderness strives to strike a balance in fostering the resources of the mind, body, and spirit: the mind through a challenging college preparatory curriculum; the body through outdoor activities and required interscholastic athletics; and the spirit through school and community service and affiliation with the Episcopal Church. Holderness remains by choice a small school where everybody plays an important role, and where students, faculty, and staff maintain close personal relationships.
Primary Responsibilities
Management:
- Manage U16 Boys and Girls athletes, coordinate on-snow training and racing.
- Manage the coaching staff, assign coaches duties.
- Develop a complete on-snow season training and competition plan for the U16 group, to be approved by the program directors, including: training and rest schedule, hill space, training and season goals. Adjust daily training program based on snow conditions and hill space.
Record Keeping:
- Compile and maintain group training log.
- Provide and post training and race schedule.
- Provide Holderness with a bullet-like highlight write-up for top results.
- Assist with the planning and organization of in-season on-snow camps/projects.
- Collect and provide typed end-of-season skier evaluations to parents and skiers; to ensure complete understanding, review evaluation with every athlete’s and parents.
- Provide Holderness parents with weekly updates to be shared every Thursday.
- Administer individual skier goal sheet for the season.
Medical:
- Assist in any medical/injury situation and be responsible for communication in any incidents (in accordance with Holderness injury protocol).
Meetings:
- Is required to travel (drive skiers) and coach at U16 and USSA competitions.
- Attend relevant meetings and functions as required by both FSC/Holderness including NHARA Coaches Council
- Attend Fit Day and Holderness School Parents Weekend meetings.
Travel protocol/Camps and away trips/overnights:
- 24-hour supervisory duty — supervise downtime; physical fitness maintenance and warm-up duties; proctor study halls; assist athletes with equipment maintenance and preparation; support and promote good nutritional health while travelling.
Other:
- Assist with set-up and tear-down of safety fencing throughout the season and to improve and ensure the safety of on-hill training and competition environment.
- Assist in the maintenance of on-hill equipment such as gates, poles, fences, drills, radios, video cameras, etc.
- Follow all on-hill safety procedures as outlined by Cannon Mountain and Holderness/FSC.
- Follow USSA, Holderness School and Franconia Ski Club code of conduct at all times.
Qualifications
- USSA coaches and officials certification
- USSA coaches license or foreign equivalent
- Must have a valid driver’s license and passport
- High school diploma; college degree are preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and cold temps
- Ability to set training courses and race day courses
