Lots of skiers head up to ski in Finland hoping to meet Santa and see the northern lights as well as enjoying the famously light, powder snow and the magical winter scenery in Europe’s far north.

The Finnish resort of Ruka has an added attraction this month though, its popular Polar Night Light Festival, now back for its fifth year.

At this time of year there’s very little daylight at northerly latitudes and the slopes are floodlit all day, but the festival cheers things up by lighting the slopes of various hues.

It’s more sophisticated than just multiple colours however, this is “light artworks” – some on the slopes, some accessible for non-skiers in other parts of the resort too.

This year’s festival runs for the last two weeks of January from the 14th to the 30th.
